Your Teens Holiday Ready-for-College Checklist
Your Teenâs Holiday Ready-for-College Checklist Parents of high school juniors and seniors, listen up. Holiday break is a great time to make sure your teens are ready to attack the home stretch of high school in order to get ready for college. Here are a few tips on how your college-bound teen can make the most of this holiday break: Visit college campuses. Juniors and even undecided seniors could take a couple of days to visit any colleges or universities in their stateday trips or afternoon visits (depending on the distance). Classes might not be in session, but you and your teen can still take a self-tour of campus and the town and visit with any personnel that are available (e.g. financial aid). Register for the next SAT/ACT. The next 2020 SAT dates are March 14, May 2 and June 6 and the next 2020 ACT dates are February 8, April 4, June 13 and July 18. Theres still plenty of time for your junior to prepare effectively for the next exam if he or she is trying to earn the best possible score before starting those senior year applications. Seniors applying to schools with March or later application deadlines could retake the ACT one last time in February to raise that score. Take an SAT/ACT prep course refresher. With the earliest SAT/ACT date being February, December is the perfect chance for your teen to dedicate some time to studying. Have your teen call Huntington to explore our three levels of exam prep programs: premier, 32-hour and 14-hour. He or she could even start the work over break when things arent as frenzied. Work on college applications. Have your senior pay attention to those college application deadlinessome might be as early as January. Holiday break is a great chance for them to complete all application requirements, fine-tune those application essays and make sure all sections of their applications are complete or close. Follow up on recommendation letters. Your senior might have already requested recommendation letters from a teacher or guidance counselor, but with some downtime on his or her hands, its wise to follow up. If an application is due February 1 and your teen is hoping to have all materials submitted by January 15, the timing to check in with the recommender is perfect. Check on outstanding tasks. If your teen is using the Common Application, have him or her review the Dashboard to make sure there arent any outstanding items that might require follow up (such as transcript requests or essay questions to finish). If your teen isnt using the Common Application, have him or her check the specific college requirements to make sure nothing has fallen through the cracks. Refine that scholarship list. Some scholarship deadlines have passed already, but not all. Your teen should revisit that list of target scholarships to remind him or herself of deadlines and requirements and use the weeks of holiday break to work on applications. When school is back in session and life is hectic again, your teen will be glad he or she was proactive. Encourage your teen to use holiday break to get ahead on all of the tasks on the horizon for college. Before school is back in session, it is a good time to do soand the effort in and of itself will help your teen get into college mode and finish high school strong.
English Conversation Classes Talking About Economic Growth in Brazil
English Conversation Classes Talking About Economic Growth in Brazil Brazilâs booming economy received a further boost recently with the news that the South Korean car manufacturer, Hyundai, is to locate its first Latin American manufacturing plant in Piracicaba in Sao Paulo State. Its a perfect subject for an English conversation class.Letâs read Hyundaiâs press release on the launch and then answer some questions based on it:The Hyundai Santa Fe.(Seoul, Korea) Hyundai Motor Company, South Korea ´s largest automaker, has chosen Sao Paulo, Brazil, as the site for its seventh overseas production base, completing the company ´s expansion in all of the world ´s major fastâ"growing markets and further diversifying its operations to seek stable growth.James Choi, President of Hyundai Motor Co. ´s International Sales Division, and Jose Serra, Governor of Sao Paulo State, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today (Thursday, local time) at the Governor ´s palace in Sao Paulo City. According to the initial agreement, Hyundai Motor will invest about US$ 600 million into the whollyâ"owned subsidiary in the first phase, to build a 100,000 unitsâ"aâ"year plant in Piracicaba City in Sao Paulo State. The groundbreaking ceremony for the plant is scheduled to take place as soon as November of this year. Piracicaba City is about 157 kilometers Northâ"West of Sao Paulo City.Securing sales in emerging markets such as Brazil, as demand in traditional markets such as the U.S. and Western Europe stabilize, is key to Hyundai Motor ´s sustainable growth and success. The company ´s new plant in Central Latin America ´s largest market will also enable it to respond quickly to competition from Toyota and Honda, which are also seeking to build production facilities in Brazil.Hyundai Motor, which began searching for an appropriate site in Brazil since 2006, had shortlisted three states in Brazil, including Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro. The selection process was long and difficult as all three states made extremely favorable offers. However, Hy undai Motor finally decided on the state of Sao Paulo for its outstanding environment for automobile manufacturing. The city of Piracicaba was the best choice for us because of the city ´s skilled workforce, good distribution network, convenient access to a broad supplier base and the incentives offered by the state government, Mr. Choi said after the signing ceremony. Hyundai Motor will do its best to contribute to the local economy and community by operating an efficient and successful plant. In the first phase, Hyundai Motor plans to produce an allâ"new flexâ"fuel car (which can run on both gasoline and ethanol) in the Bâ"segment, starting from the first half of 2011, to satisfy the high demand for small cars in Brazil. Last year, Bâ"segment vehicle sales took up 65 percent of total sales in the South American country. Hyundai Motor ´s new plant may also directly and indirectly create about 4,000 new jobs locally. In the second phase, depending on demand in the region, Hyundai M otor plans to expand the plant, to increase its lineâ"up and export to neighboring nations.Despite the relatively high import tax of 35 percent, Hyundai Motor has sold 36,006 vehicles in Brazil in the first eight months of this year, nearly triple the amount sold a year earlier.According to the press release what factors led Hyundai to locate a plant in Brazil? How does Mr. Choi say the plant will benefit the city? How will the new cars be fueled? What does Hyundai hope to achieve with this new plant? What factors do you think led Hyundai to locate its new plant in Brazil?Highly educated local workforce in relevant fields such as engineering. The popularity of the Hyundai brand of cars in Brazil.Growing population in Brazil which suggests high future demand for cars.Brazil is a top producer of ethanol, the fuel used to run Hyundaiâs cars.Current economic stability in Brazil.Tax breaks from the Brazilian government benefiting Hyundai. How do you think the arrival of Hyundai will benefit Piracicaba?Increased employment in the area.Hyundaiâs investment in the region for example in infrastructure will benefit everyone living there. The requirement of fluency in English set out by Hyundai will encourage staff to learn the language and raise the overall standard of English spoken in the area. What advice would you give Hyundai as the company begins operations in Brazil? One Brazilian student of mine said that he would advise Hyundai to adapt itself to Brazilian working conditions and expectations rather than enforcing a foreign work ethic onto Brazilians. Is this viable? What do you think? If you would like to have a conversation class based on this blog, contact us.Did you find this blog interesting? Feel free to share it on Facebook and Twitter.

The 5 Big Advantages to Learning Multiple Languages at Once
The 5 Big Advantages to Learning Multiple Languages at Once So, youâre learning Korean, Spanish and French at the same time?Youre definitely not one to shy away from a challenge. It doesnt matter how much you love languagesâ"learning a few at once can be tricky.Think back to those desperate moments you spent sitting alone in your room and asking your tired self, âwhat was I thinking? Whatâs the point of all of this?âWell, let me help you answer that question.Turns out, thereâs a lot of advantages to learning multiple languages at once. Here, I plan to demonstrate that doing it is worth every ounce of effort you put into the task. Ill give you 5 profound benefits that make learning languages coolâ"and worthwhile for every person on this planet. The 5 Big Advantages to Learning Multiple Languages at Once1. Its Good for Your BrainDid you know that your brain can be structurally changed for the better in just three short months?Thatâs right! Swedish and German scientists conducted a study on conscript interpretersâ"people who deal with multiple languages as part of their daily jobsâ"and measured the size of each ones hippocampus and cerebral cortex. They then subjected these interpreters to three months of intensive language studies. Military boot camp style! After 90 days of intense training, the scientists, donning their spotless lab coats, came in and again measured their subjectsâ brains. They discovered that their interpretersâ hippocampal regions, along with three other areas of the cortex, had grown significantly. The cortical areas increased in their thickness, indicating higher fire power for these areas of the brain.Learning multiple languages isnt only about increasing brain mass, it improves memory as well. Psychologist set out to determine the cognitive differences between monolingual and bilingual children, or if any even existed. They subjected the children to a battery of mental tasks which measured working memory, executive function, visuospatial span, cognitive quickness and conflict re solution. What they discovered was very telling indeed. Bilingual children outclassed their monolingual counterparts in all test conditions. In short, people who grow up bilingual have faster, more accurate and more robust mental capacities. If you want your kids to have a head start in life, start them young on the road to learning multiple languages.Lastly, its been known that just speaking a second language can delay the onset of Alzheimerâs Disease. One study has shown that being bilingual, as opposed to being monolingual, may delay the onset of dementia for a good 5.1 years. The brain is like a muscle. The more you use it, the sharper and stronger it gets. Multilingual people have the advantage of having brains that are in good shape. The benefits of switching back and forth between languages is priceless. They have brains that need to recognize, distinguish and analyze the different linguistic patterns, intonations, vocabulary, grammatical rules and idiomatic expressions of d ifferent languages. Because of that need to do more, they have well-oiled neurons which are less prone to the detrimental effects of old age.2. It Saves Precious TimeImaging that youre travelling in South America and get lost while on the way to officiate a wedding. Youre standing at an actual crossroad and looking up at two signs. The left one says âUna Viaâ (One Way), the one on the right says, âCamino Cerrado Delanteâ (Road Closed Ahead). Can you imagine how much driving time youd save simply knowing what those signs mean? How about finding yourself at a French mall and badly needing to go to the restroom because your tummy disagreed with the escargot you had for lunch. Can you imagine looking at foreign signs that would score 70 points in Scrabble? Or imagine finding yourself trying to communicate with French men who fake not knowing any English, desperately gesturing and asking where the rest room is.Wouldnt life be much easier if you could communicate while abroad in France or Spain? That way youd make the most of your 5-day vacation instead of spending half of it looking for some dingy rest room.If learning a second language is such a time saver, how about learning a third and a fourth language? Imagine how much of the world you could navigate! That being said, learning more than one language at a time requires careful planning and an awesome strategy. There are two ways of studying multiple languages. One way is sequentially and the other is simultaneously. The methods are right in the names. Doing multiple languages at the same time (simultaneously) saves time because, in a way, youre multitasking. Instead of getting fluent in one language in 1.5 years, you become fluent in 2 languages in 2 years.3. You Can Take Full Advantage of Similarities and Differences Between LanguagesOne advantage of learning multiple languages at once is that you can play the languages off of one another. You can take notice of (and better remember) the eccentrici ties of a language by noting its similarities or differences with another tongue. An example of this are the many cognates shared by romance languages. Cognates are words in different languages that share similar spelling, meaning and pronunciation. Examples in French â" Italian â" Spanish are:a) ARMFrench: le brasItalian: il braccioSpanish: el brazob) FEVERFrench: la fièvreItalian: la febbreSpanish: la fiebrec) TONGUEFrench: la langueItalian: la linguaSpanish: la lenguaIf you notice, the spelling, meaning and pronunciation of these words (and many, many others) are similar for French, Italian and Spanish, indicating that they have a common etymology.Cognates are very useful for 2 major things.1. Vocabulary building. Letâs say youâre studying French, Italian and Spanish simultaneously. In the examples above, instead of building your vocabulary in just one language, youre building it for 3 at the price of 1.2. Contextualizing. Cognates are very useful for contextualizing. As I ve said, you can play the languages off of one another. For example, your new Italian friend told you over the phone, âletâs meet on sabato.â The problem is, youâre not sure if âsabatoâ is a newly-opened Italian restaurant downtown. Fortunately, you do know that âsábadoâ is Saturday in Spanish. In short, knowing a second language puts you at a definite advantage in learning a third or a fourth one. So, why learn it serially when you can do it simultaneously?4. Tackling Multiple Languages Keeps You From Getting BoredAnother advantage of learning languages simultaneously is that it keeps you alive and alert on the task.Tired of differentiating ser from estar? Sick of âBuenas diasâ? Try a little Anyong Haseyo and discover a whole new soul in the Korean language.Tired of watching Spanish telenovelas or listening to Latin songs? Try some of the awesome Japanese drama series that currently populate the internet.By the way, if you like learning languages through fu n, native language videos, then youll want to check out FluentU. FluentU takes real-world videos like music videos, movie trailers, news, and inspiring talks, and turns them into learning lessons. It lets you learn using fun videos and real-world context. FluentU is available for Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and English, and one subscription gives you access to all languages. You donât have to bury yourself for months on end in a single language. There always comes a point in any language learners endeavors when they finally plateau and get sick of the lessons. You can either barrel through that phase, or you can refresh yourself by getting into another language. Donât think of it as quitting, think of it as productively redirecting your language learning energies. Whatâs important is that you can have several language âmistressesâ on the side. It keeps things interesting. This works especially well for languages that are so different, they are like a breath o f fresh air.5. It Opens Opportunities for Employment, Romance and Multicultural UnderstandingLearning a 2nd language broadens employment opportunities. Being a multilingual compounds your prospects and give you a sharp edge in the job market. (The truth is, even when you wonât be using âSwedish, Norwegian, Danishâ in your work. But writing those on your resume makes you stand out from the rest of the English-only crowd. Cool, huh?)Over the next decade, Spanish and Chinese speaking skills will be one of the most critical skills sought for by recruiters. As globalism surges forward, it makes learning multiple languages ever more essential. English isnt enough anymore. A great number of international corporations arent based in English-speaking countries. In addition, US-based corporations are waking up to the fact that in order to flourish in the emerging markets, they have to learn how to say âNi Haoâ and not just âHow are you?On the romantic end, youll be ready to start a bilingual relationship. When your significant other has a different first language than you, what better way is there to express affection than learning romantic phrases in their native tongue? âSorryâ is just different when you say âlo siento.â And who knows, she might just forgive you.Speaking your loveâs language brings you to their reality of things. It promotes understanding between you and your significant other. As you know, different languages are also connected to diverse perspectives of the world we live in. By speaking their words, you put yourself in their shoes for a minute. At the very least, youll know that weve got your backs while you tackle all your target languages. And One More ThingIf youre digging these learning benefits, youll love using FluentU. FluentU makes it possible to learn languages from music videos, commercials, news and inspiring talks. With FluentU, you learn real languagesâ"the same way that natives speak them. Now there are immersion programs available for all ages. The outdated common wisdom holds that adults are mostly useless at languages, but nowadays its safe to say thats just not true. Under the right conditions, not only can you learn a language like your younger self, but you can also attain native-like brain processing of your new language. And what are these right conditions? The right conditions involve immersing yourself in a foreign language. While modern technology and pedagogy are giving us fantastic new tools every year, one thing remains certain: Immersion works. And immersion works every bit as well for adults. Adults and children are both clearly capable of learning new languages to high levels of fluency, but one big thing separates us from our childhood selves: Our cumbersome, super-structured, always-demanding adult lives. But today, hardworking adults are among those who stand to reap the most benefits of learning a second language. In a job market thats globalizing all around us, added language skills can make you not only an asset to your company, but also a better participant in your own community. Fitting Language Immersion into Your Adult Life: Its Not as Hard as You ThoughtA gap year before or after university is a great time to take a language immersion trip, but mid-career or between careers can work just as well for many.On the list of things that get in the way of adult language learning, a career is usually number one. But it doesnt have to be.Nowadays, foreign language training is registering on corporate agendas. In some parts of the world, companies even fund in-house or independent language training as part of employee professional development. If your employer hasnt jumped on the language learning ba ndwagon yet, maybe theyre following the trend of flexible and even unlimited vacation policies thats spreading across tech startups and other innovative businesses. Under many of these arrangements, three months off for a language immersion program thatll make you even more of a company asset can be an easy sell to your boss. And, if all else fails, its not really so drastic or bohemian to quit your job and go learn a language these days. In the era of career-hopping, what better reason is there to end job number three than to spend a year at home or abroad learning a language that makes you a competitive candidate for job number four?Even if you dont see a practical opening in your adult life for a language immersion program now, dont be surprised if you see it come next year. You might find that a newer and more disruptive program will extend you the chance to immerse yourself in a language. Take any opportunities that come your way! Before we get into some immersion programs you can consider, lets first look at a couple of alternate options you can use for immersion if youre lacking the time or the funds right now.Creating an Online Immersion EnvironmentIn the digital age, immersion exists in spectrum.Sure, youre more thoroughly immersed while navigating the chaotic Tokyo metro, but you can still immerse yourself in Japanese at home. For those times before, after, between and even during traditional immersion programs, technological tools can help make sure you keep your target language on your mind. One way to create a home immersion environment is with your favorite language learning apps and immersion software programs. You can use these digitally-enhanced approaches to add some extra practice during your immersion trip, or to fill your every waking hour with the language you want to hear without even leaving your home.FluentU does just that. With carefully selected video content in languages from around the world, FluentU online language immersion is o ne of the most effective programs for starting on your language before starting an immersion program, continuing to learn after one or to add a dose of digital practice wherever you are, no matter what language youre working on.Language Immersion by Working AbroadAs we mentioned before, employers are more and more willing to foot the bill for your language learning, but the opportunities for work immersion abroad go much further. If youre already working for a multinational company with offices overseas, explore your options for transfers and see if those options include free or subsidized language immersion courses on the ground. If youre not too committed to your current job, then the world really is your oyster and the immersion opportunities are endless. Sites like Idealist and Overseasjobs.com offer listings of jobs overseas; if youre lucky, bigger employers may include language training programs in your employment package, but if youre not, youre still living abroad, one of the best ways of getting the total authentic immersion experience. For those focused on building their professional profile abroad, skills-intensive volunteer trips can do just that while giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a language. Many of the projects on sites like Workaway and HelpX are more like informal internships than traditional volunteer projects, including roles in everything from marketing and business development to construction and community development, and their terms are often flexible. 5 Awesome Educational Activities to do on a Summer Road Trip
5 Awesome Educational Activities to do on a Summer Road Trip Stay Sharp on Your Summer Road Trip With These Educational Activities Many families will take a road trip this summer. This long-standing tradition provides a great opportunity for families to visit various places of interest that bring Americas history to life, teach about the inner workings of politics and government, or display the beautiful natural habitat throughout our country. However, road trips can also test a familys patience while they deal with traffic jams and endless miles on the road. Two ways families can make the summer road trip experience a success is to break up the drive into smaller parts by looking at educational sights along the way or enriching the road trip with fun activities. When young students had an opportunity to stay occupied and entertained they tend to enjoy family vacations more, and it can be a lifesaver for the whole family. 1. Summer reading series If kids are going to be in the car for an extended period they might enjoy working on their reading comprehension skills. Of course, when kids read about their favorite characters in a series of novels of their choice it wont seem like learning but rather just a fun pastime. Its great for kids just to be able to read independently, learn new vocabulary words, and let their imagination take them to new places during the summer months. It will also keep them busy during those hours on the road (READ: Why You Should Get an Irvine Test Prep Tutor Over the Summer). 2. Coastal view points Many families will be traveling up and down the California coast to visit family or get to a beach destination this summer. If this is the case, there are several coastal viewpoints that will allow kids to stretch their legs and enjoy a little bit of fresh air will also learning about their environment. Many California view points offer information about the wildlife and plant species that live in that area.
